Chapter Eleven

Bad at Love

I sat next to Spirit on the hood of my Porsche 911, the latest, and best, of Civil's “sorry for killing someone” gifts. The last day of summer had passed weeks earlier, but the sun that accompanied the season lingered. After spending so many freezing falls and winters in Ojai, California, I was more than happy to sit out under the sun in Miami.

Spirit and I squinted, doing our best to watch Tailyn's most recent interview on my phone. Ultimately, the sun didn't allow it, so we settled for listening to the audio instead. The interview aired hours earlier and was trending on Twitter and Instagram. I assumed it was because the host, Quest Dawson, was only interested in one thing. The same thing the rest of the world was interested in.

“So, Fantasy, this is your first time appearing as a guest on a talk show since Civil's infamous diss record. What brings you to my stage?” Quest asked, excitement in his voice, as if he could taste the ratings and views Tailyn would rake in for him.

Tailyn took in a tense breath and blew it out. “There are some things I need to address and clear up. People are making assumptions about me that have been damaging my image based on something an old friend promised to keep a secret, even though he didn't mention why it was a secret.”

“You're talking about your daughter?”

“Yeah.” Tailyn paused. “I have a child in Georgia who my cousin has been raising since she was born. She's six and is the sweetest little girl I've ever met. She's smart and talented and has the prettiest smile. She's also happy and well-adjusted, and I don't know that all those things would be true if she'd been with me all these years.”

“And why do you say that?”

“I was twenty when she was born. I was young and my career was just about to take off. I'd also been raising kids for years. As you know, my parents died when I was young, so the responsibility of caring for Sovereign and The Black Rosé fell on me. At first, I thought I was up for it, but then her father, Alexis, died, and I knew I couldn't take care of her the way I needed to. At least not then.”

I knew Tailyn's voice well enough to know that Kami had spent a long time coaching her on what to say, when to tear up, and what not to react to during this interview. To the untrained ear, Tailyn had just cleaned up her speech pattern and vocabulary for a career-defining sit-down, but I knew Kami's words when I heard them. Sure, I believed the sentiments were Tailyn's, but her publicist had scripted the words.

“You said Alexis died. I'm guessing this is the Lex Civil referred to in his song. How did he die?”

“Someone killed him.”

“Do you know who?”

“Yes. And I'm not a snitch. But the person was dealt with. And they'll be dealt with again.
